This issue is the first edition of FEaTures, published by the Colleges Collaboration Fund (CCF) of the National Business Initiative (NBI) and designed to promote debate and discussion about developments and issues in further education and training (FET) and to keep the stakeholders informed about what is happening in the sector. A number of articles in this issue focus on the first annual FET Convention of the CCF which was held in October 2000. Other articles include: 'The Tirisano Fellowship Programme' by Francis Senona and Zanemvula Mnyaka (p. 8-9) in which the authors highlight their experiences in the United Kingdom (UK) as Tirisano Fellows; 'The Partnership Training Programme: partnerships for change' by Lesley Powell and Candice Harrison (p. 10-11) which looks at college-industry and college-community linkages; 'In conversation with Khetsi Lehoko' by Cornia Pretorius (p. 13) which provides a profile of the deputy director general of FET in South Africa; 'Strength through strategy and focus: the design to match approach' by Ruth Gee (p. 14-15) which looks at UK's involvement in the transformation of South Africa's FET sector; 'Self-assessment and quality improvement in English further education' by Mark Griffiths (p. 16-17) which discusses the role of self-assessment in relation to quality improvement in the UK and its relevance to South Africa; 'Looking forward: the Colleges Collaboration Fund Workplan 2000-2004' by Colleges Collaboration Fund (p. 18); 'Achieving public accountability in FET' by Anthony Gewer and Nick Taylor; 'Strategic planning for the AIDS crisis' by Robin Landman (p. 21) which looks at the impact of this crisis on FET and the related challenges; 'Key descriptors of technical colleges' by Nick Smart (p. 22) which is a summary of a research report on technical colleges funded by the CCF; 'Using research data for strategic planning' by Ros Jaff (p. 23-24) which outlines a study which sets the stage for government and stakeholders to map out a process for the implementation of South Africa's new FET legislation; 'Merging tips & traps' by Cassie Kruger (p. 26-27) which discusses the recent merger of four technical college campuses in Western Cape; 'The UK further education experience: a view from the South African Colleges Student Association' by Gregory Bogopane and Alex Mashilo.
